Career prospects and Scope of MD Microbiology

Pros: Microbiology has definitely revolutionalized the outlook today adding great adjuvant to Clinicians in Hospital setup,it has drifted from benchsidethitical care medicine for healthcare delivery
It has made a benchmark in terms of Hospital infection control and Prevention with team leader in the committee
Infectious disease is another area where they are the torch be areas and update in outbreaks,investigations point of care diagnostics with such automation has really been of great help to patient care and need of hour

Cons:
Though its a dry subject,it can be strategically planned to settled down in life as a carrer
The learning teaching in Medical Colleges have to be more competent involving early applied Microbiology aspects
So if teaching is your passion you can opt for this speciality if u have good skills updated
If ur interested in diagnostic field and research you can go ahead
Clinical Microbiology has again come in limelight because of increase of Antimicrbial drug resistance and to curb it ,we are designated people to design the Antibiotic policy and leaders of Antibioticstewardship

Pros:
-Branch with clinical touch deals with identification of the causative organism n do an antibiotic susceptibility test.
-Good for those interested in teaching & research side..
-Can do research in various branches like mycology ,virology,parasitology n bacteriology & immunology too.
-Research oriented docs r very much welcomed by the institutes like SGPGI.

  • Do have super specialisation in neuro virology in some institutions like NIMHANS, Infectious diseases control, reasearch in Genetics(gene cloning) and for p.hd if interested..
  • Can hav ur lab set up &clinical practice.
    CONS:
  • Needs lot of financial support for setting up a lab.
    -Most of the state of the art techniques of microbiology still not yet asked for in peripheries by treating physicians.
    Final take:
    -Branch where you need to be constantly updated with the day to day advancements.
    -Overall u will enjoy if u b a clinical microbiologist rather than just confirming the diagnosis.
    -Clinical microbiology will have great importance in near future as there is a great emphasis on antibiotic resistance & infectious disease control.
